Wensleydale Cheese & Apple Fruit Bread Bakes
Product Description Wensleydale Cheese & Apple Fruit Bread Bakes

Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze - or so they say! Must be why this combination of Wensleydale cheese and apples works so well as a simple dessert or hot fruit snack. One thing's for sure - you'll love it!

1 large egg

150ml (1/4 pint) milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

a couple of pinches of ground cinnamon or nutmeg

4 thick slices fruit bread

1 crisp apple - such as Cox, Pink Lady or Braeburn

100g (4oz) Wensleydale cheese, thinly sliced

4 teaspoons honey or maple syrup, to serve

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a baking sheet with a little vegetable oil.

2. Whisk the egg, milk and vanilla extract together in a shallow bowl. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg. Dip the slices of fruit bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak in for a few seconds, then transfer the slices to the prepared baking sheet.

3. Core and thinly slice the apple and arrange the slices on top of the bread, then finish off with the sliced Wensleydale cheese. Sprinkle with a little extra cinnamon or nutmeg.

4. Baked in the oven for about 4 - 5 minutes until golden, then serve, drizzled with 1 teaspoon of honey or maple syrup per slice.

Serves 4 small or 2 larger appetites

Cook's tips: These fruity slices taste really good served with 0% fat Greek yogurt or low fat natural yogurt. Another time, try making them with Lancashire or Cheshire cheese in place of Wensleydale.
